Space is the area between one positionand the other; this is the key factor in Edwidge Danticat, Joyce Carol Oates and Judith Ortiz Cofer’s essays. They are all three are affected by space in their culture and social class. Danticat with the social class and culture in her neighborhood, Oates’ culture that lead her to sneaking out, and Ortiz Cofer’s culture and social class affecting her childhood. All three authors’, although from different areas, face the same distance of spaces between where they were then and where they are now.

Danticat with the social class and culture in her neighborhood, Oates culture that lead her to sneaking out, and Ortiz Cofers culture and social class affecting her childhood. Danticat, secluding herself in her home, never noticed how her neighborhood social class was. After the fire next door, Danticat started noticing her neighborhood. During her time in Westbury Court, many tragedies occurred. A murder of guy who lived in 6J, her fathers friend dying of cirrhosis, the theft of her fathers expensive camera and the Haitian immigrant that got shot and killed. The social class in her neighborhood was one that many wouldnt like to pass by, African American citizens in every corner, drinking and playing games. The scene looked like a block party with all the chat and music being played. Danticat, after growing older came to realize that without these incidences in Westbury Court, she probably would have not noticed the social class of Westbury Court.
