Patients aretaught to monitor their thoughts and identify thosethat trigger addictive feelings and actions whilethey learn new coping skills and ways to prevent arelapse. CBT usually requires 3 months of treatment,or approximately 12 weekly sessions. Theearly stage of therapy is behavioral, focusing on specificbehaviors and situations in which the impulse controldisorder causes the greatest difficulty. Astherapy progresses, there is more of a focus on thecognitive assumptions and distortions that have developedand the effects of these on behavior. Thistreatment involves assessment of the type of distortion,problem-solving skills and coping strategiestraining, modeling in therapy, support groups, andkeeping thought journals."
