Tutor description

Male killifish exposed to estrogens in sewage effluent may develop intersex characteristics and undergo changes in their genetic expression. As such, two experiments were carried out, the first to determine testis alterations through histological analysis, and the second to determine any changes in the expression of CYP1C1, a gene significant in the control of steroid hormone protection.

James WongBiology 191.26Professor Daniel RittschofHistological analysis of testis alterations and differential expression of CYP1C1 in killifish (Fundulus heroclitus) due to exposure to sewage effluent1. AbstractMummichogs or killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) in Calico Creek are exposed to sewage runoff from the Morehead City Wastewater Treatment plant. Preliminary results in the first experiment do not show any determination of any testis alterations. For the second experiment, approximately half of the specimens have had RNA extracted from their livers and purified. Following completion of this, expression of CYP1C1 in each of the specimens will be ascertained.2. IntroductionMummichogs or killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) are known for being hardy and resilient marine species, capable of adjusting to environments of variable salinity, temperature, oxygen availability and environmental toxin content. Despite Calico Creeks proximity to sewage and anthropogenic activity, a population of killifish is able to inhabit this locality due to their natural hardiness. Organism
