Tutor description

A fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical energy from a fuel, usually hydrogen, into electricity through a chemical reaction with an oxidising agent, often oxygen. Fuel cells differ from batteries in that if they are provided with fuel and an oxygen source they can continuously produce electricity

Fuel cells differ from batteries in that if they are provided with fuel and an oxygen source they can continuously produce electricity. Brief history:The alkaline fuel cell (AFC), also known as theBaconfuel cell was first demonstrated by Welsh scientist Sir William Grove in 1839. Francis Thomas Bacon of Britain began experimenting with alkali electrolytes in the late 1930s, settling on potassium hydroxide (KOH) instead of using the acid electrolytes that Grove used in his early discoveries. KOH performed as well as the acid electrolytes and was not as corrosive to the electrodes. Applications of cells:Alkaline fuel cells (AFC) are used for power generation during space flights and have potential to be used in utility vehicles (for example military applications) and small watercraft. They are high performance fuel cells, with the reaction time being faster than other
