Placement is an important part of FPGA designstep which determines physical arrangement of the logicblocks in the FPGA. The quality of placement of logicblocks determines overall performance of the logicimplemented in the FPGA. In this paper, a number ofplacement optimization techniques are reviewed; min-cut,quadratic, simulated annealing, and a hybrid approach ofusing genetic algorithm with simulated annealing technique. The methodology of each optimization technique ispresented and its advantages and disadvantages areevaluated. Overall, the hybrid approach of using geneticalgorithm with simulated annealing technique produces bestresult, reaching a global optimal solution. The hybridapproach of using genetic algorithm and simulatedannealing optimization technique is implemented usingMATLAB and its results are presented using a wire-lengthdriven placement as cost function.
