(Tucker) At face value, people may look at the statistic and praise the growth of student efficiency and effort for the past fifty years, but perhaps theres something hidden beneath. Are students really getting better in the college classroom, or is there something hidden behind the faade of growing GPAs? Yes, and no would answer the first question. With the advent of the personal computer, students have access to more resources than ever before. In so little time, the Internet has grown to be a widely used source of help and information. Could this account to the rise in GPAs nationwide? Yes, it can, but sadly it plays only a small part. The majority of the reason for rising GPAs is a phenomenon known as grade inflation. I want to address what grade inflation is, why it happens, why it is a problem, and then focus mostly on what is being done to curtail it. Grade inflation, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is the assigning of grades higher than previously assigned for given levels of achievement. In other words, it is giving higher grades for a performance that would have received a lower grade in the past. It is an undeserved grade.
