Despite his efforts of producing many sons with six wives he only had one heir to the throne - Edward, born 12 October 1537, who was the fruit of love between the king and Jane Seymour, his third wife. Unfortunately, Jane Seymour died soon after giving birth to Edward and Henry VIII didn't marry another woman for three years, although marriage negotiations were tentatively begun soon after her death. Still, his aspiration to continue the dynasty was fulfilled and he had the heir who, one day, would continue his work.As Henry VIII's only son, Edward was from birth prepared to rule England. Since his early childhood he was educated in various studies such as "learning of tongues, of the scripture, of philosophy, and all liberal sciences1", as he recalled. Edward was given a fastidious education and was intellectually already a grown up person. Teachers praised his intelligence and eagerness in acquiring knowledge but, unlike his father, he preferred mind over matter and displayed no will to take part in any physical activities. This was caused by the fact that he fell ill with quartan fever2, a symptom of malaria which occurs every four days.
