bvbn17.1 ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICSArchitectural acoustics may be defined as thedesign of spaces, structures, and mechanical/electricalsystems to meet hearing needs. With properdesign efforts, wanted sounds can be heard properlyand unwanted sounds (noise) can be attenuatedor masked to the point where they do not causeannoyance. Achieving good acoustics, however, has become increasinglyfrequencyis sometimes referred to using a term borrowed frommusicpitch. The higher a sounds frequency, thehigher its pitch, and vice versa.Hz. Most speech information is carried inthe upper frequencies, whereas most of the acousticenergy exists in the lower frequencies. A sound composed of only one frequency iscalled a pure tone. The frequencies in the scale of Fig. 17.4 allstand in the ratio of 2:1 to each otherthat is,16:32:63:125:250, and so on. Borrowing againfrom musical terminology, they are one octaveapart. These particular frequencies are also acceptedinternationally as the center (reference) frequenciesof octave bands used for the purpose of soundspecification.physical magnitude of sound is variously describedas sound power, sound power level (PWL), s
