United States Drug Enforcement AgencyHow was the DEA established? What is its purpose?President Nixon established the DEA in 1974 as a major part of his war on drugs. During the1960s, the conflict in Vietnam led many American soldiers to abuse and become addicted todrugs. This addiction and behavior did not remain overseas when the soldiers returned home.Vietnam is located in the golden triangle of drug production, particularly of opioid drugs ofabuse like heroin. As a result, not only did the prevalence of drug abuse come back fromVietnam, but it spread to all sorts of other people, and as addiction and abuse increased, so didassociated issues like drug trafficking and drug-related crime.This is a good start. one thing to add before the official DEAwas established was that drug enforcement was split into twogroups, the Bureau of Drug Abuse control which was drugs thatwere seen as the most dangerous which included hallucinogensand stimulants and the Bureau of Narcotics which included drugslike Marijuana and heroin. In the late 1960s with the wholecounter-culture hippie movement recreational drug use soaredwhich began to alarm the government. The war in vietnam allowedfor even greater access to these drugs and the DEA was a mergingof the two (Bureau of Drug Abuse control + Bureau of narcotics).The purpose of the DEA is essentially to enforce controlledsubstance and law and stop the spread of illegal substances inthe population.What
