The Glass Menagerie1JKInstructor Christa DimaioIntroduction to American LiteratureNovember 9, 2015The Glass MenagerieThe Glass Menagerie2I do not think that any of the characters were able to live their lives in the real world andfunction like normal people do. The characters Jim, Tom, Amanda, and Laura try many differentways to free themselves from the battles of life. Jim keeps focusing on his years in high schooland how he felt like an idol. Tom digs deep in his poetry to escape the battles. Amanda keepsfocusing on her past instead of the present and future. And Laura is all about her records and theglass animals. They cannot escape their bad memories. And I think that the fire escape symbolizes thewhole theme of the play, an escape route.Tom talks about his father leaving long ago and there is talk of widows, owing a casinomoney, and marrying on the rebound. The play ending with the descending down the fire escape. The play was actually quite a bit confusing to me and I head to read
