Anxiety states and sleep disorders arecommon problems and SHs are among themost widely prescribed drugs world wide.Sedation:Suppression of responsiveness toconstant stimulation, decreasedspontaneous activity and ideation. A good sedative agent has little effecton motor or mental functionsHypnosis: induction of sleep.Agood hypnotic agent produces sleepthat as much as possible resemblesnatural sleep Aneffective sedative/anxiolytic shouldreduce anxiety and exert a calming effectwith little or no effect on motor or mentalfunctions. A hypnotic drug should produce drowsiness,encourage the onset and maintenance ofsleep. Gradeddose dependent depression of CNSfunction is a characteristic of SHs. The drugs differ in the relationship betweenthe dose and the degree of CNS depression Benzodiazepinesare the most important SHs. Developed to avoid undesirable features ofthe barbiturates-potential for induction ofpsychologic and physiologic dependence. DrugA: older sedative hypnotic drugs likebarbiturates, and alchohols.
