Achebe criticizes Joseph Conrad for his raciststereotypes toward the continent and the people of Africa. Conrad wrote the story froman outsider point of view; the author did not put himself in the indigenes shoes. Africanswere portrayed as savages with no languages other that grunts, with no occupationsbesides worshipping imaginary gods (Mongredien). To Conrad Africans were notcharacters but props. In response, Achebe wrote Things Fall Apart, the story of an Iboman, Okonkwo, and the tragedies he had to go through. Africans are represented asindividuals capable of speech; not just one massive conglomerate of tribes. Their customsare not regarded as eccentric or bizarre, the author presented it, as one would do with anyother culture.
