Political Science 150A Federal System of GovernmentThere are many different ways to run a country with government andnot all of them are as useful as the next. Most countries in the world areunitary governments and all of their power lies with the central government.The United States operates a little differently. Here we use a system knownas federalism, which allows two or more levels of government authority overthe same area of people. It would seem that having a central governmentsystem would be much easier on everyone, so why do we continue to usefederalism?Politics play such a big role in the function of this country andfederalism allows that to run very smoothly. More opportunities exist forparticipation in politics because federalism decentralizes politics. People areallowed to be elected to serve a small piece of the country as opposed to theentire country. Many interests can be heard through this manner, intereststhat wouldnt have been heard through a central government. Citizens areable to change public policies with active participation in the governmentsystem; this lets them know that the government is listening and recognizestheir involvement.
