In Franz Kafkas novel, The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa awakes one morningto find his whole life has changed. He is no longer a simple traveling salesman, but hasmorphed into a giant beetle. Samsa now must live his new life completely cut off fromhis former life and must deal with his family and their varying reactions to his newcondition. He is now treated, especially by his father, like a disgusting vermin: shunnedby his family until he eventually dies. While this kind of story can be very interesting toread, what exactly causes an author to write something such as this? Kafka came from amiddle class family in Austria, and while he was a very bright child, his relationship withhis family was less than perfect. He had an especially fragile relationship with his father,iand mainly, his parents put much of the weight to carry their family onto Kafkasshoulders. This type of overbearing expectations is what bred the feelings that Kafka putinto his story, The Metamorphosis. This story is basically a representation of Kafkasown family life written in literary form. Franz Kafkas relationships with his parents, inparticular with his father, were very overbearing for him. Constantly feeling trapped andused, these feelings were translated into his story, The Metamorphosis.
