Sequential logic circuitsA sequential logic circuit is a circuit whose output depends not only on the present states of the inputs tothe circuit but also on the past states. The previous states of the inputs therefore have an effect on the present states of the circuit, i.e. a sequentialcircuit uses memory. The past history is provided by feedback from the output to the input.A sequential logic circuit is made up of combinational logic circuits and memory devices/elements. Ageneralized block diagram of a sequential logic circuit is shown in Figure 4.7.1.Figure 4.7.1: Block diagram of a sequential logic circuit. From Figure 4.7.1, external inputs are applied to the combinational circuit to generate external outputsthat are fed to the memory devices that hold the value of the output. The external inputs come from outside the circuit design and are not controlled by the circuit.Internal inputs are a function of a previous output states. The information held by the memory element is called the internal state of the circuit. The sequential circuit uses its previous outputs together with its current inputs to generate the next outputs.4.6.1. Types of sequential circuitsThere are two types of sequential circuits: Synchronous and asynchronous sequential circuits. In synchronous sequential circuits, the memory devices change their binary value (state) only at
