In the current classroom setting there is a greater emphasis on problem solving and promoting cooperative learning instead of the emphasis being on information transmission. The focus of learning is no longer on the three R's but instead there is a greater focus on the four "Cs". The Four C's are critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. In order for students to learn effectively in the active learning environment the student must connect prior knowledge to the new content being introduced.
