ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION ON WOMENAND YOUNG GIRLS1ABSTRACTFemale genital mutilation (FGM) is a term used to describe various traditional practices thatinvolve the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for cultural and traditionalreasons in many African societies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the issue of FGM inAfrica, particularly in Kenya, as one of the biggest social problems that is affecting the majorityof women and young girls. The study will focus on the experiences of women and young girls,who know more about the practice, by looking at their flashbacks, the procedure, consequencesinvolved before and after the mutilation, cultural beliefs, religious views on the practice, and thehuman rights that were violated by the practice of female genital mutilation. Female genitalmutilation has spread to other parts of the world and it has become a global issue. Some of thefemale genital mutilation consequences include the physical consequences, psychologicalconsequences and social consequences, which occur before and after the mutilation process. Thepractice is a criminal offence according to legislation because it causes pain, violates the humanrights and the health of women and puts girls at risk. Empowering people in the community withknowledge on the subject and providing the necessary resources will help eliminating thepractice.
