The natural disaster began witha powerful earthquake off the northeast coast of Honshu, Japans main island causing widespreaddamage on land and instigating a sequence of large tsunami waves that destroyed many coastalareas of the country, especially in the Tohoku region. The tsunami also activated a major nuclearaccident at a power station along the coast. Water, food, gas and electricity, supplies weredisrupted by the quake followed by transportation and telecommunications failure. Severalnuclear reactors were also severely damaged. Population centers near the nuclear power gridwere endangered. The earthquake was accompanied by fires, landslides, soil liquefaction anddam failure. The tsunami spread to other locations across the world. These include California,Hawaii, Ecuador, Oregon, the Galapagos Islands, Chile, Peru and Antarctica. The earth trembleswere felt as far as the Northern Mariana Islands, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, parts ofnortheastern China and southeastern Russia.
