Most of theUnited States rely heavily on the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, even though there isa wide variety of different and better options for energy. There are alternative energy optionssuch as wind and solar power. So why do Americans burn fossil fuels and how can it bechanged in the future? There are many reasons that come to mind, but the most common reasonis people are afraid of change and do not quite understand the possibilities change can bring.The United States oil dependency is strong. According to Independent Task Force, theUnited States is responsible for 25% of the worlds oil consumption and 60% of foreign oilimports (484). Considering how small the US is compared to countries like China or India, theUSs consumption is a disgracing amount. In the coal department, William Tucker states thatthere are 283 coal mines in West Virginia, and 449 in Kentucky (ITF 501). Thats a lot of coalmines for only two states. According to the
