American Me (1992) film and social change in American cultureAmerican Me (1992) is a movie that explores the theme of violence because thescenes in the film are chaotic and ruthless in acts. The director of the 1992 movie EdwardJames Olmos depicts the violent activities through crimes committed by the Mexican mafiawhich is one of the rising Chicano gangs in the streets of Los Angeles, California. He usestheir drug dealings, murder and their life in prison to explore the reasons why most minoritiesare in American prisons. Through the protagonist character of Santana, American Me (1992)reflects the results of bitterness caused by the evils of the American society against theminorities making them criminals. It also mirrors the rot in American prisons that instead ofcorrecting the inmates, it transforms them into antisocial beings and gangs who cannot fit in anormal society. Therefore, this essay uses the discrimination and social evils depicted inAmerican Me (1992) to show how films can be used as agents of social and political changein the society.Films as any other form of art can be used as agents of behaviour modification insociety.
