The site chosen for the settlement was just of the James River. The site they chose to live on was marshy and lacked safe drinking water, the settlers lacked some skills necessary to provide for themselves, and many settlers died of starvation and disease1. There were 105 settlers, many of which were gentry. Instead of building shelters or looking for food, the settlers rushed off their boat and began looking for gold immediately. They werent concerned with food and shelter because they assumed the Indians would provide them with everything they would need. When Relief ships arrived in 1608, there were only 38 settlers left alive. They were in poor health and the settlement was in near anarchy. On the Relief ships came John Smith with 200 additional settlers. Smith was an experienced military man who knew the importance of discipline. In his General History of Virginia (1624) he recounted how he ordered any malingerer to be banished from the fort as a dronein other words, sent out to certain death. The many gentlemen of the colony who had hitherto found it beneath their dignity to do any sort of work now found themselves raising crops, tending livestock, or constructing palisade.2 Jamestown was coming along, but in 1609 John Smith was injured and was forced to return to England.
