Upon detecting a collision, air bags inflate instantlyto cushion the exposed occupant with a big gasfilled pillow An air bag consists of an air bag module (containingan inflator or gas generator and an air bag), crashsensors, a diagnostic monitoring unit, a steeringwheel connecting coil, and an indicator lamp.Raw materials An air bag module has three main parts: theair bag, the inflator, and the propellant. Theair bag is sewn from a woven nylon fabric andcan come in different shapes and sizesdepending on specific vehicle requirements. The driver's-side air bag material ismanufactured with a heat shield coating toprotect the fabric from scorching, especiallynear the inflator assembly, duringdeployment.
