In doing so, it will critically examine the relationship between written Cantonese and social identity and how that relationship is reinforced through print advertising. This research is important in trying to understand more about the social identity of Hong Kong Chinese and how its written language has helped to shape the identity and how it is continuing to strengthen that identity as well. The structure of this paper will first begin with a brief history of Cantonese as a spoken and written language. Next, we will look at the methodology of our research and its aims. Following that, we will give our analysis of written Cantonese in comparison to its counterpart of standardized written Chinese. From there, we will show what findings we discovered from a questionnaire that our group devised and distributed. Lastly, we will give a conclusion that will give some suggests for possible research and predictions of the implications of what that research may find.
