Founded during the Victorian era, its founder, Jeremy Bentham, came to believe that there was a need for society to rely on reason rather than metaphysics. The central tenet of utilitarianism is what is called the "Greatest Happiness Principle'. Because the human beings are rational self-interested creatures, says Bentham, they seek to maximize their pleasure and minimize their pain. Thus, a morally correct action is one which results in the greatest possible pleasure within a given set of circumstances. To give a personal example, this would be like purchasing a box of Girl Scout cookies without really having the money to do so. It could be argued that it was to support a good cause, however the real root reason was because chocolate seemed like a necessity at the time, and indulgence was desired.
