Today, the Haqqani Network is the fiercest and deadliest insurgent group in Afghanistan and has been responsible for hundreds of American Soldiers deaths and thousands of civilians. Moving into safe havens established in Pakistan after attacks, the Haqqani Network is the strongest enemy the United States and allies face in the border provinces of Paktia, Paktika and Khost (P2K) ( Haqqani Network, 2011). Led by Sirajuddin Haqqani, the son of Jalaluddin, the Haqqani Network is a close ally of the Afghan Taliban and Al Qaeda. Labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) in 2012 by then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Haqqani Network seeks to re-establish sharia law in Afghanistan. The insurgent group demands that the United States and Coalition forces withdraw completely form Afghanistan and no longer interfere with the politics or internal affairs of Islamic nations.

THE HAQQANI NETWORKThe Haqqani NetworkIntroduction:The events of September 9, 2001 have made the United States and other allies fighting the Global War on Terror face a haunting truth - that sometimes our greatest allies become our greatest enemies. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in the 1980's, the United States through the CIA, funded and supplied Afghan warlord Jalaluddin Haqqani with millions of dollars and ammunitions to help in the fight against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Haqqani was a leading advocate of the Arab-Afghans and deftly organized Arab volunteer fighters to wage jihad against the Soviet Union. In so doing, the future of many militants, including future al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was protected (Mulrine 2008). Haqqani, according to U.S. officials, was a highly effective rebel fighter, a marvelous leader and very much beloved in his territory.
