1. Name the structures of the urinary system. What is the main function of this sytem.Ureters, urethra, bladder, and kidneys make up the urinary system which primary function is to eliminate metabolic end-products and unessential chemicals and precisely controls the body's water levels and sugar levels. 2. What does retroperitoneal mean?Outside the peritoneum.3. Distinguish between the cortex and the medulla of the kidney. The cortex of the kidney is the light outer region of the kidney and the medulla is the dark inner region of the kidney.4. Differentiate between the renal pelvis and the renal hilus. The renal pelvis is the area as seen on the diagram to the right which acts as a funnel to direct fluid from the cortex and medulla into the ureters which are the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder. The renal hilus is the area where the blood vessels and the ureter connect to the kidneys. I remember this as the dent in the bean shape.5. What type of tissues make up the urinary bladder? The urinary bladder is made up of both transitional epithelium so that the bladder can stretch and smooth muscle fibers to assist with passing urine.6. What is a sphincter? Where is a sphincter located in the urinary tract?A sphincter is a round shaped muscle that works as a tight opening/closure structure. There is a sphincter located just after the connection of the urethra to the urinary bladder which controls emptying. 7. Name the blood vessels of the kidney.
