Poverty Having examined the state of global society and changes in the nature of development theory, I want to move on now to examine current social issues in Caribbean society. In this section the intent is to examine aspects of Caribbean society within the context of the global setting we have analyzed. The rational for this is twofold. Firstly, we hope to gain an appreciation of the ways in which the process of globalization has affected the region and our ways of thinking about them. Societal processes that occur at the local and regional levels of Caribbean society can be usefully thought of as being the outcome of the interplay between local and international factors. In our examination of Caribbean social reality, therefore, our intent is to try and understand the ways in which this interaction has worked. The second rational for the examination of Caribbean society as undertaken by this course is that this type of understanding should make us cognizant of the types of interventions in Caribbean social reality that will produce effective change and improvement in the living conditions of our people. In this section of the course therefore we will examine poverty and external migration. We will end the course by looking at what some of these new approaches to intervention in Caribbean social reality might be.
