7. What happens during chemical reactions: energy, activation energy and need for reactionsA chemical reaction involves the making and breaking of chemical bonds. During a chemical reaction, substances interact and form new bonds and new substances.Only electrons in the outer shells of the atoms are involved when the atoms react during a chemical change.Chemical reactions occur in the cells of all living organisms. Activation energy is the energy needed to get a chemical reaction started.9. Water/polarityWater is a good solvent for a number of reasons. The most important to keep in mind are: 1) Water is a polar molecule, which means that it has a separation of charge. One end of the molecule is positive, and the other is negative. This happens because it has a bent shape... the two hydrogen atoms are on the same side of the oxygen, and this side is positive and the other end of the oxygen, that has excess electrons, is negative. 2) Since water has two hydrogen atoms that are relatively bare of electron density, it is able to form "hydrogen bonds" with other molecules that contain a very electronegative atom. Hydrogen bonds are not a very strong bond compared to covalent or ionic bonds, but they are able to bind to many molecules and are an important reason why water is able to dissolve some substances so effectively.Hydrophobic means that a molecule is largely nonpolar, and therefore does not really have a driving force to attach to a particular side of a water mol
