Tutor description

Building on the study guide "Basic Trigonometry", this guide deals with the application of right-angled triangles to practical situations. After explaining angle of elevation and angle of depression, six carefully diagrammed problems are presented and solved step by step. The six problems are typical examples that students will meet in examinations. Successful completion of this guide will ensure that students can handle any practical problem situation.

Further Basic TrigonometryThis guide deals with the application of trigonometry in right -angled triangles to solve various practical problems. It assumes you have an understanding of the use of sin/ tan/cos to find the sides and angles in a right-angled triangle given appropriate information. If you are unsure, please read the guide "Basic Trigonometry" before attempting this guide.1. Angle of elevation and angle of depressionBefore attempting the problems, we revise the above concepts. To elevate means to lift up. (think of an elevator)An angle of elevation occurs when we look up at something. Below is a diagram to illustrate this: plane angle of elevation Observer * normal line of visionIn order to see a plane flying above, the observer has to raise his/her eyes. The resulting change from the normal line of sight is called the angle of elevation.Similarly a person at a height ( the pilot, someone on top of a building) must look down to see people or things below: the amount of change from the normal line of vision is called the angle of depression.(remember the d in depression stands for down)plane normal line of vision angle of depression
