Emotions and Stress Ch 13 (also Health Psychology)I. Emotions: Darwin came up with 6 emotions. A. Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions (8) see image in book. 8 primary emotions on inside of wheel. Outer emotions can mix to form inner emotions (secondary) ex. Joy + acceptance ? love. Dot in center = no emotion. All emotions can have varying intensities. Plutchik's color solid is more intense. B. How do we know others' emotions Paul Ekman: faces. Looked at faces specifically. Duchenne Smile is the truly happy smile. Named after man who cataloged all the major muscles that create smiles. If the baby doesn't have a smile soon enough, they aren't developing social skills soon enough. Difficult to fake facial expressions if the emotion is coming up from inside, even for actors. Study where they asked subjects to read comic strips and rate them 1-10 on funniness. Told them to put pencil in mouth to make smile or frown?position of your face actually effects your emotion: facial feedback hypothesis. C. How do we know our own emotions (Three theories of the experience of emotions) read in book. How do you know when your happy/angry? Three theories. 1.
