Family violence refers to physical abuse between two or more partners in an intimate relationship. It may involve willful intimidation, battery, physical assault, sexual assault, or other abusive behavior. According to a 2000 report of the U.S. Department of Justice, among both sexes, with an estimated 1.9 million women and 3.2 million men physically assaulted annually, family violence makes up the biggest percentage with 22.1% of women and 7.4% of men having been physically assaulted by an intimate partner, either current or past.
