Tutor description

When a group of people meet, everyone cannot begin speaking at the same time because the result will be confusion. They need to maintain order and follow certain rules for meaningful conversation to take place. Similarly, when nodes on a network share a transmission medium, there needs to be some mechanism for controlling the access of nodes to the medium. Two prevalent contention control protocols are CSMA/CA and CSMA/CD. The CSMA/CD protocol directs the sending node what to do when it detects a collision. The CSMA/CA protocol tries to avoid the collision. In this exercise, you will find out whether 802.11 wireless LANs use CSMA/CA or CSMA/CD. What are the steps? • Task 1: Determine the contention control method used by 802.11 wireless LANs. Procedure 1. Search the Internet for information on whether 802.11 wireless LANs use the CSMA/CA o

The contention control method used by 802.11 Wireless LANsThere are two major contention control methods that are used in the MAC layer for transmission of packets in both the wired and the wireless network. Contention control method implemented in the two forms of transmission using different media is called Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA). This forms the base of the two contention control methods used in the 802.3 (Ethernet) and 802.11 (Wireless) platforms. The CSMA/CD is mainly suitable for users who can detect transmissions from another source within the network and enable random delays in order to initiate the transmission process when the network is clear. The collision detection mechanism is mainly suitable for wired LAN. CSMA/CA on the other hand works by avoiding collisions by first sensing the network for any transmission in order to transmit (Zheng 155). This form of CSM
