Spinal stenosis is one component of the broader process of spinal degeneration, and can affect the neural elements through narrowing of the central spinal canal, the lateral recess or the neural foramen. Diagnosis has been simplified in many cases through the use of MRI. Conservative treatments may be effective in the management of symptoms, but often are of short-term benefit in these conditions. Approximately 250,000-500,000 US residents have symptoms of spinal stenosis.
