PEMDASOn the GMAT, you need to know the correct order of operations when simplifying an expression. Thecorrect order of operations is: Parentheses-Exponents-(Multiplication/Division)-(Addition/Subtraction).Multiplication and division are in parentheses because they are on the same level of priority. The same istrue of addition and subtraction.Simplify P = PARENTHESES. First, perform all the operations that are inside parentheses. Note that in terms of order of operations, absolute value signs are equivalent to parentheses. In this expression, there are two groups of parentheses:(2 x 4 + 2) and |7(-4)|In the first group, there are two operations to perform, multi-plication and addition. Using PEMDAS, we see that multiplication must come before addition.2 x 4 + 2) = (8 + 2) = 10In the second group, there is only one operation: multiplica- tion. We do this and then we find the absolute value.|7(-4)| = |-28| = 28Now our original expression looks like this: E = EXPONENTS. Second, take care of any exponents in the expression. Our expression only has one exponent. Now our expression looks like this: 5 + 100 - 28 + 18 / 3 x 5 - 8M&D = MULTIPLICATION & DIVISION. Next perform all the multiplication and division. It is importantto note that multiplication does not necessarily come before division. A group of multiplication and division operations must be performed from left to right. The division symbol (+) is rare on the GMAT, but you should be familiar wi
