In the laboratory setting sometimes it is necessary to find the wavelength that best absorbs. When doing so one would use a Spectral Scan. A spectral scan allows you to create a graph showing the relationship between wavelength and absorbance. When looking at the spectral scan you will see both a wave minimum and wave maximum. The wave minimum occurs when there is no absorption. However the wavelength maximum shows the wavelengths in which absorbance is the highest. When using the highest wavelength it allows for an increase in sensitivity.

In this lab a double beam spectrometer was used to measure the absorbance of caffeine. It has two separate light paths, one that goes through the sample and the other goes through the blank.
