SURFACTANTSIR ERICDefinitionSurfactant is a complex naturally occurring substance made of six lipids (fats) and four proteins that isproduced in the lungsSurfactant is a mixture of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), other lipids, and proteins. The low surface tension when the alveoli are small is due to the presence of the fluid lining the alveoli. If the surface tension is not kept low when the alveoli become smaller during expiration, they collapse.component'spercentageDipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine62Phosphatidylglycerol5Other phospholipids10Neutral lipids13Proteins8carbohydrates2PRODUCED WHERE? Surfactant is produced by type II alveolar epithelial cells in the lungs. Typical lamellar bodies, membrane-bound organelles containing whorls of phospholipid, are formed inthese cells and secreted into the alveolar lumen by exocytosis. Tubes of lipid called tubular myelin form from the extruded bodies, and the tubular myelin in turn formsthe phospholipid film. Following secretion, the phospholipids of surfactant line up in the alveoli with theirhydrophobic fatty acid tails facing the alveolar lumen. Purpose Surfactant reduces the surface tension of fluid in the lungs and helps make the small air sacs in the lungs (alveoli)more stable. This keeps them from collapsing when an individual exhales. (atelectasis) To facilitate recruitment of collapsed airways In preparation for breathing air, fetuses begin mak
