You know youre a redneck if If a West Virginian couple divorces, are they still brother and sister? How many blondes does it take? Although statements like these bring about a few chuckles, they also show a form of stereotyping, unfairly portraying crude messages about certain groups of people. Stereotyping is all too common, and a majority of people fall victim to it in some form or another. In this essay, I will discuss three stereotypes that I have encountered in my life, including views about bikers, opinions of women working certain jobs, and ideas about teenage cliques. Upon discussing these three stereotypes, I will also show the affect these have on certain people and give some arguments that people use to justify their narrow-minded opinions about such groups. The first group that needs to be addressed is what I refer to as motorcycle enthusiasts. Growing up, I had initially grown to fear this wild, crazy and dangerous gang of beer-drinking heathen criminals. The words in quotes are those I remember coming straight from my mothers mouth, and even though a few of her family members owned and rode Harleys, she was convinced that being a biker was a bad thing. I can understand why she feels this way, having grown up in the 1960s, a time when the media really started having a field day reporting on many notorious biker gangs. People with the same mindset as my mother learned what little they do know
