This system has been in existence since 1960s, though it has become more popular and acceptable in the society as an appropriate alternative system of roofing to the traditional one in the recent past, mostly as from the late 1990s. This acceptance was due to its multiple environmental benefits among saving of heating and cooling accordingly. The use of green roofing system does provide an excellent insulation to the building in question, a factor that eventually leads to a significant reduction in the consumption of energy. This system equally acts as a natural filter for rainwater, a situation that undeniably helps in the reduction of the amount of rain drainage. With reference from Scholz-Barth and Weiler (2011), it is evident that the embracement of green roofing systems enables the plants on the roof coverage to absorb approximately 50% of the total rainwater landing on such roofs, an amount that would otherwise run into water bodies and sewerage systems.The embracement of green roofing technology has as well become more popular among urban areas, as it helps in the creation of an additional green space, which brings an element or aspect of nature in the huge concrete and steel jungle.
