Amid the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s William's child, John Hathorne, took part as one of three judges sentencing the guilty. To separation he from this side of the family Nathaniel included a "w" to his name later in his life stages (Stewart, 1961). Nathaniel was conceived without any sibling following him for was the main child of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Clark Hathorne. With the spread of yellow fever, when Hawthorne was four his father passed on from this dreaded disease while acting duty as the sea captain while adrift in 1808. The family was left with no much to spend, they couldn't afford much (Stewart, 1961). This forced them to move in with Elizabeth's affluent siblings. At an early age Nathaniel had a serious leg injury which left him stationary for a while and as he healed, he used up the time to build up an unquenchable desire for reading. This set his sights to become a writer and nothing else (World Biography, 2015). With the help of his well off uncles, Nathaniel went to Bowdoin College from 1821 to 1825, where he met Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and futur
