It was published in the year 1947 and had a French title, "La Peste", and its translation to English was carried out in 1948. The story is staged in the city of Oran in Algeria. The book gives an exaggerated account of the plague victims, given that the deaths in the city during that period in Oran were merely a fraction compared to when the plague struck in the years of 1556 an 1678. It story believed to have describing the cholera epidemic in this region in the year 1849. The storyshows just how much of an effect a plague would have on a given population (Gray 2).A disease is raging through Oran and is claiming about three hundred lives a day from all walks of life. Dr. Bernard Rieux, who is the narrator in the story, is a highly admired physician and surgeon and is about 35 years of age. He is of medium height and has broad shoulders, and has what can be perceived to be a "knowledgeable look". He is a just and truthful man, one with admirable social traits, a kind man who goes out of his comfort zone in order to at least try and help out the sick in Oran. He is married to Madam Rie
