The other is the context of memory which cues present at the time of storage aid retrieval. According to Fisher and Gieselman (1992), frequently asking brief closed-ended questions as well as continuously interrupting the witness, does not allow them to independently recall the situation, which is why the cognitive interview is now frequently used instead. This essay seeks to examine how the cognitive interview works and discuss its value in a criminal justice setting. There are four techniques which are considered when carrying out a cognitive interview. The first is to report everything; to include every single detail of the event which the subject can recall - even if it is small or not seen to be important at the time, without interruptions. This is designed to improve the accuracy of the memory of the event which the eyewitness can recall.
