Taylor began his professional career as a school teacher in Leicestershire, England but when his Protestant views did not line up with the Church of Rome he lost his position with the school and moved to the United States. In America, Taylor settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and continued his education at Harvard where his love of the Protestant cause led him to the ministry. Through is education at Harvard Taylor became a Pastor and a physician. Taylor was a New England Puritan that was devoted to his congregation but he also had a passion for poetry. Edward Taylor was a pastor at his Massachusetts church for sixty years and during this time wrote many poems. Taylor was married twice and had eight children and lived to the age of eighty seven. He first began writing poetry in order to woo his first wife but later became one of his life passions. Taylor's poetry was focused on the individual's relationship with God and self examination but was intended to remain private and never to be published. Taylor was known for being extremely pious but was also stubborn, serious, and grave in nature. The poems Taylor wrote were only for his personal enjoyment and he instructed his children upon his death to never publish them.
