For example the police have not always had the right to just stop and frisk people in society or to search any car that is stopped due to a minor traffic violation but rulings by the Supreme Court have broadened the investigatory powers of the police in some areas while restricting their behavior in others areas. In the case of Terry vs. Ohio the Supreme Court determined that a police officer that has reasonable suspicion can stop a person on the street and frisk them (Barrett, 2012).
