Hate Crime AnalysisNameAJS542DateProfessorHate Crime Analysis There are many populations or "groups" in society that are considered different or that have suffered from discrimination due to their unique differences. While traditionally the minority and the female has suffered the greatest amount of discrimination in society as of late it has been the homosexual citizen that has been the target of the hate crime. The more the homosexual community comes out in society the more discrimination they have faced. Hate crimes are acts of violence perpetuated against a victim solely based on their race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual preference. These crimes are severely punished in the United States. There have been many cases of hate crimes against the homosexual community but one shocking crime involved the murder of Matthew Sheppard. The murder of Sheppard spawned the anti-gay hate crimes movement and resulted in the enactment of Matthew Sheppard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The Sheppard case began on October 7, 1998 when he was kidnapped by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson and driven to a rural area where he was tied to a fence and beaten. The two men took a butt of a gun and beat Sheppard on the face and head before leaving him tied up where he was left to the elements during the night.
