When police officers are present in society they deter criminal behavior and ensure that the criminal element is identified and arrested. Police officers are considered public officials that have an ethical duty to act within the confines of the law and to treat all community members fairly and equally. They are responsible for protecting the citizen and their property and ensuring the community members does not fear becoming victims of crime. Challenges arise when police officers display unethical behavior, such as racial profiling and excessive force, in minority communities. In current society one of the greatest concerns involving unethical behavior by police officers involves racial profiling.
