Instead of being sentenced to a specific amount of time in prison or jail the offender instead faced some cruel punishment or death. At the turn of the 19th Century during the Progressive Era the focus was on reforming the prison system in order to rehabilitate criminal offender instead of punishing them in order to successfully reintegrate the back into society. This allowed the offender to leave prison and become more productive members of society. Another important change that occurred to the prison environment during prohibition was the development of separate prisons for women and juvenile offenders. In the past women, juveniles, and male offenders were all placed into the same prison to await their sentence. The progressive Era brought with it the recognition that women and male offenders should never be housed together and that juvenile offenders should not be treated the same as adult offenders. While rehabilitation created many positive changes for members in society and enable the criminal offender to take positive steps to change their lives the design of the prison resulted in prisoners being isolated to single cells from the time they entered the prison until the time
