In practice, the term usually refers to the diagnostic identification of antibodies in the serum (SERI, 2010). Forensic serology determines the different types and characteristics of blood evidence. The evidence is then tested and then the serologist prepares the evidence to be presented in a court case. Serologists also examine other biological evidence such as; saliva and semen. DNA evidence is used to create a genetic profile of the criminal offender. Serological evidence is analyzed to show individuals that could be excluded or not excluded from the sample but it does not create an almost one hundred percent probable genetic match like DNA evidence. The cold case of the murder of Dr. Helen Greenwood was solved using serological evidence. Greenwood was strangled before she was supposed to testify in a 1985 sexual assault trial.
