While Erikson's belief that the human personality developed through stage his ideas originates from Freud's theory of psychosexual development except with a focus less on the sexual and more on psychosocial development. Erikson's found that social events in the life of the child or adult directly impact the type of personality that will develop. One of the most important aspects of this lifespan development theory is in each of the eight stages the ego identity of the person develops. Ego identity is the conscious sense of self that develops through social interaction with the environment. In the first interview the interviewee is a forty year old male that has just experienced a major trauma and has lost his right leg while serving in the Army in Afghanistan. While losing a leg is extremely devastating during this development stage the individual is trying to determine what contributions they have made to the world and needs to feel like they are contributing to the overall welfare of their families. The conflict was Bryan's inability to focus on career as would be a normal aspect of this stage because he has been disabled and cannot work any longer.
