False Confession PaperNameClassDateProfessorFalse Confession Paper A false confession refers to a criminal suspect or persons of interest confessing to a crime they did not commit. The false confession can be the result of the motive of the confessor or it can be the result of improper or illegal police practices. A confession in a court case is extremely powerful and in most cases will result in a guilty verdict. In the case of the Norfolk Four, four men confessed and were found guilty of the brutal gang rape and murder of Michelle Moore-Bosko in 1997. The four men, who were later exonerated for the crime, claim that misconduct by the police resulted in all four men confessing to a crime they had not committed. The victim was the wife of a U.S. Navy man that was stationed in Norfolk, VA and the men convicted for the crime Joseph Dick, Derek Tice, Eric Wilson, and Daniel Williams were wrongfully convicted after confessing to the crime (Hansen, 2011). The Norfolk Four confessed to the crime after being interrogated for hours by police but all later recanted their statements claiming the confessions were coerced. While there was no direct evidence tying the men to the crime the jury had a hard time believing that four men would confess to a crime they had not committed. They were all found guilty of murder and sentenced to life sentences. Despite the defendants exemplary histories with the Navy and lack of previous criminal record
