In the case study, Couldnt Put Humpty Together Again: Symbolic Play With A Terminally Ill Child, (Sweeny, 2003) we are introduced to a young boy named Matthew. Matthew was five years old and in his terminal stages of a brain tumor when he received short-term music therapy treatment. His chances of survival were very small so his family decided to seek out a childrens hospice facility. Despite his illness, Matthew had a playful attitude and a unique sense of humor. However, as the growth of his tumor progressed and his condition deteriorated and tasks that once came easy to him no longer were.Upon assessment, the music therapist assigned to Matthews case observed Matthews inability to focus on activity for long and was very restless (Sweeny, 2003, 134). He also engaged in inappropriate behaviors such as pinching the bottoms of people, and could be destructive and difficult at times. He was able to verbally state awareness of his conduct by telling the therapist the he was allowed to be as naughty as he liked because he was poorly (Sweeny, 2003, 154). However, he never acknowledged or displayed an understanding that he was dying. As a result of his brain tumor, there were also several physical symptoms that Matthew experienced. They included nausea, lack of balance, and vision and hearing problems. Individual music therapy sessions were decided for Matthews treatment plan.
